“The last expedition. The mystery of Wanda Rutkiewicz” in Italian cinemas!

Multisala Varese screens on February 3 at 20:50 the documentary film by the Polish director and climber, Eliza Kubarska, on the life and disappearance of the famous Polish alpinist, Wanda Rutkiewicz. Out in 2024, after gathering awards at international film festivals, the film arrives to the movie theaters also in Italy this February.

Last year an amazing film came out, “The last expedition”, about the life of Wanda Rutkiewicz, an exceptional alpinist who disappeared in 1992 in Himalaya.

Wanda Rutkiewicz is one of the heroic women climbers from Poland with exceptional record: the first woman to reach the K2 summit, the first European woman and the first Pole to climb Mount Everest. A strong woman as she was, she empowered other women in this then even more male-dominated world and she specialized in leading all-women team expeditions, such as the successful climb of the North Face of Eiger in 1973 with Danuta Wach and Stefania Egierszdorff.

The movie was made in the course of 7 years of work, between Poland and the Himalaya by Eliza Kubarska, Polish renowned climber and mountain film director. It features voice recordings and videos by Wanda Rutkiewicz from the expeditions never shared before. Illustrious alpinists such as Reinhold Messner and Krzysztof Wielicki share their memories of their exceptional fellow alpinist.
